Basic Kicks in Kickboxing

At Falcon Boxing Miami, we primarily use English names to refer to the kicks in the discipline of Kickboxing. The basic and most commonly used kicks in our school are:

Roundhouse Kick or Middle Kick: This is a circular kick where the shin strikes the body with a circular motion. Generally, this kick is aimed at the midsection, but it can also be directed at the leg, in which case it is called a Low Kick, or at the body as Middle Kick, or at the head, where it is referred to as a High Kick.

Low Kick: This is a circular kick aimed at the opponent's thigh.

The low kick can also be targeted at the inside of the thigh.

High Kick: This is a circular kick aimed at the opponent's face.

Front Kick: This kick strikes the opponent's face or chest with the ball of the foot. It is also called a Push Kick because it pushes the opponent backward.

Side Kick: This kick strikes with the heel of the foot, with the leg parallel to the ground. It can be aimed at the head or the body.

Semiround Kick: This is a forty-five degree circular kick aimed at the opponent's midsection or head.

Back Kick: This kick is performed with the base of the heel of the foot.

There are many other kick techniques or variations of the above, including spinning kicks, jumping kicks, and other variants such as:

Hook Kick: Extend the leg to the side of the body and hook the leg back to strike the head with the heel.

Crescent Kick: This is a kick where the leg is raised in a 45-degree arc above the opponent's head and then brought down forcefully, striking from top to bottom with the heel or the ball of the foot. This kick can be performed from outside to inside (Outside Crescent) or from inside to outside (Inside Crescent).

Axe Kick: This stomp kick travels downward, striking with the heel. It differs from the Crescent Kick as it is brought up vertically toward the opponent and then brought down. It is often seen with variations involving a forward jump.

Spinning and jumping versions of some kicks include:

Spinning Hook Kick: A spinning version of the hook kick, where the fighter turns 360 degrees before delivering the hook kick.

Spinning Back Kick: A spinning version of the back kick, involving a full 360-degree turn before the kick is delivered.

Jump Spinning Hook Kick: This is a spinning hook kick with an added jump for increased power and height.

Jump Spinning Back Kick: This is a spinning back kick with an added jump to enhance the power and reach of the kick.
