Names of Punches in Boxing and Kickboxing

Writer: Alvaro FalconAlvaro Falcon

At Falcon Boxing Miami, we have adopted globally standardized names to describe the various punches used in both Boxing and Kickboxing classes.

Punches

The most important punches are:

Jab or "1": This is a straight punch from the lead hand. The arm extends from the side of the torso, which rotates quickly in conjunction with this action. A jab can be aimed at the head or the body of an opponent.

Flying Punch: This punch is generally thrown with the rear hand. The fighter jumps off the lead foot, kicking back with the rear foot while simultaneously extending the rear hand forward in a punching motion, resembling Superman flying through the sky

Overhand: This powerful punch is characterized by being thrown over the shoulder in a downward trajectory aimed at the opponent's head. It is often used when the opponent is constantly moving away from the exchange of punches.

These punches will always be part of the grading exams in both Boxing and Kickboxing.
